Something very simple to ponder: we are on the way out. Every decade of this century will summon forth new humiliations for western democracy as its power and influence wanes irreversibly throughout the world. Our children will live to see a world where we are a second-rate power.

If I were going to make that bet, I wouldn’t make it in 2008. I’d have made it in 1979, or 1963, or 1933. If America’s on the way down the tubes, why did the yield on Treasuries go to zero last week?

Enh. America was a second-rate power up until World War II, and we did just fine. Having lost global hegemony, I’m left to wonder: Will we become quasi-nihilistic narcissists pursuing creature comforts for their own sake, like the former colonial powers of Europe? Or will we revert to earlier periods of New World history, when we were the marvel of the world simply for producing radical ideals and state structures that shouldn’t have functioned but shockingly did?
