Having recently gotten rid of a few embarrassing Sci-fi titles cluttering up my bookshelf, I suddenly found myself in need of more.
- I gave Eon a skim-through this week. As I re-read the parts about general nuclear war, it dawned upon me that I’ve already gotten used to thinking of the United States in the past tense.
- Bova’s Planet books give the feel of having been written in a single afternoon. I enjoy reading them, but I don’t enjoy enjoying them–they’re the literary equivalent of Arby’s.
- I’m visting the public library every other week now. Last time it was full of kids watching a puppet show. How that helps learn reading I can’t fathom.
I find it vaguely disgusting to participate in the “summer reading” ritual of the NPR set, but it can’t be helped; they’re taking away what few free TV channels remain, and prices for movies are unattractive compared to second-hand paperbacks. At least I’m not reading at the beach.
