The pizza wars are heating up again. Until now the pizzaria chains have contented themselves with stuffing coupons into my mailbox. No longer. Now I’m getting letters, yes, letters inviting me to try the wares. They’ve already tried cold-calling; next step is to greet me at my door with a hot pie, asking me to try a slice. It’s all for nought. Lately it’s been New York-style by-the-slice takeaway only. The kitchens are dirty and the cheese gooey, but at least it’s honest.

To him who has been given much, more still shall be given…
The Atlantic is still following the ongoing food crisis. The Economist noted that grain prices have grown even faster than oil. The cruel truth is that high food prices are probably good for the United States, the largest exporter of food, just as high oil prices are good for the OPEC nations. As you can see from the map, the food-importing countries are mostly those we’re indifferent or hostile to. Still, we must deplore the starvation of millions in exchange for smiling land-owners in the Farm Belt. If we wanted a Marshall Plan for the American Midwest, a direct subsidy would have been cheaper and less destructive.
